Eye Disease Risk Checklist

Eye diseases such as glaucoma can cause no symptoms until sight is lost, and only an eye test can find them. This page does not estimate an "eye age". It counts risk factors the NHS names for common eye diseases. For everyday symptoms like reading difficulty, see the Vision Health Checklist.

Before you start

Method : Eye Disease Risk Checklist — a custom points score written by this site. Each answer adds or subtracts the points shown in the Methodology table below.

Validation : Unvalidated. The points have never been tested against any laboratory measurement or health outcome, and the result is not an age.

Review : not reviewed by a qualified clinician. Educational only — not a diagnosis or a medical test.

Sudden loss of vision, a painful red eye, or sudden flashes or a curtain over your vision needs urgent same-day care.

Your answers stay in this browser tab; nothing is sent or stored.

NHS: at least every 2 years.

Methodology & assumptions

Your score is the sum of the points below. The weights are our own judgement. The old version added made-up years for self-rated eye pressure, central and peripheral vision, omega-3 and leafy greens and gave an "eye age". Eye pressure and visual fields can only be measured at an eye test, so those were removed with the age output.

Worked examples

No eye test ever, diabetes, smokes, family history, cloudy vision, no sunglasses: 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 = +10 points.

Eye test within 2 years, no diabetes, never smoked, no family history, clear vision, wears sunglasses: 0 points.

Understanding your result

This counts risk factors you reported. It is not an eye test and not an age; a low score doesn't rule out eye disease. Health-agency guidance linked below is general and based on populations, not on this score.
