Turtle Age Calculator

Compare straight shell length with published hatchling and adult sizes for a few common species. Shell length is not an exact age measurement, so this page tells you size class (juvenile vs adult-sized), not years.

Before you start

Method : compares shell length with published size points; does not estimate years.

Checked : unit conversion and size-class boundaries tested; sources checked 5 October 2026.

Review : not reviewed by a reptile veterinarian or herpetologist.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Pick the species (and sex for sliders)
  2. Measure the straight carapace length, front to back, not over the curve
  3. Enter it in cm or inches and press Compare

Methodology & assumptions

Length is converted to cm (1 in = 2.54 cm) and compared with the species' published hatchling and maturity sizes from the University of Michigan Animal Diversity Web. No growth curve is fitted, so no age in years is produced. Supported length up to 100 cm.

Worked examples

Female slider, 12 cm: above hatchling size (≤3.5 cm), below maturity size (15–20 cm) → juvenile-sized. ADW notes females reach 15–20 cm at about 5–8 years in the wild, but this is not converted into an age.

Male slider, 4 in (10.2 cm): at or above maturity size (9–11 cm).

Sulcata, 20 cm: above hatchling size (4–6 cm), below male maturity size (~35 cm).

Understanding your result

"At or above maturity size" means adult-sized, not a specific age — a 20 cm slider could be 6 or 30 years old. Lifespans shown are recorded maxima or captive averages, not expectations for your animal.
