Voice Health Checklist

Voices change with age, but there's no standard "voice age", and only a specialist can examine the voice box. This page does not estimate one. It counts voice symptoms and habits the NHS gives advice about.

Before you start

Method : Voice Health Checklist — a custom points score written by this site. Each answer adds or subtracts the points shown in the Methodology table below.

Validation : Unvalidated. The points have never been tested against any laboratory measurement or health outcome, and the result is not an age.

Review : not reviewed by a qualified clinician. Educational only — not a diagnosis or a medical test.

See a GP if a hoarse voice doesn't improve after 2 weeks or keeps coming back (NHS). Difficulty breathing or swallowing needs urgent help.

Methodology & assumptions

Your score is the sum of the points below. The weights are our own judgement. The old version added made-up years for pitch change, breath support and singing training, scored women and men differently and gave a "voice age". Those were removed with the age output.

Worked examples

Hoarse for more than 2 weeks, smokes, hours of voice use, reflux most weeks, more than 14 units: 3 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 = +8 points.

Rarely hoarse, never smoked, moderate use, no reflux, 14 units or fewer: 0 points.

Understanding your result

This counts symptoms and habits you reported. It is not a voice assessment and not an age. Health-agency guidance linked below is general and based on populations, not on this score.
